Home Security and You

There are few places where your sense of safety and security are as meaningful to you as it is in your own home. Just ask anyone who has ever been broken into, or worse, and they will tell you what a terrible feeling of violation it is. The most common crime committed involving homes is burglary.

Most criminals involved in home burglaries are amateurs. They look for easy targets, easy access, and generally want to avoid encountering or having confrontations with the occupant of the home. Because of these characteristics of home burglaries, much can be done to simply prevent them in the first place.

Most crime prevention advice and experts agree that the following are good crime prevention measures for your home:

  • Alarm systems: There are many great choices for alarm systems these days. From traditional hard-wired, remotely monitored services, to cameras, alarms and motion sensors you can install yourself, technology has made this option available to pretty much everyone. Make sure to have alarm system signs posted on windows and on your lawn if possible.

  • Locks: Periodically review the security of the locks you have in place. If you have lost a key or moved into a new place, change your locks. Always lock your doors, even if you are gone for only a short period of time.

  • Appearance: Make your house look occupied when you are not there. Leave a light or lights on, or music or the TV. Timers are good so you can mix up the times and durations when those things are on if you are gone for a lengthy period of time. Also, don’t leave notes on your door for family, friends or delivery people.

  • Visibility: Have good adequate lighting outside your home. Keep landscaping and foliage in check to eliminate places of hiding and concealment.

  • Pay attention: Know what’s normal and what’s out of place for your neighborhood. Know who your neighbors are; who belongs and who doesn’t. If someone has to do work in your home, check references if you don’t know them, or they didn’t come to you through someone you know.

These are some good prevention measures you can take to avoid home burglaries in the first place. More serious crimes such as home invasions and assaults happen less frequently, but you should be prepared for those possibilities as well. If someone actually enters your home while you are there, it implies a much more serious threat level. For this scenario, you have to ask yourself, “what is the best way to defend myself in my home?” or “should I have a weapon in my home?”.

The reality is, it is probably a good idea for most people to have some sort of self-defense tool or device in their home. What that is depends on factors such as who else is in the home, including if any children are in the home. Lethal weapons, such as firearms are always an option however, non-lethal weapons are most often a better option for the average person.

Non-lethal weapons don’t require any special permits or registration, and there is little, if any, liability involved in using them if needed. The Byrna HD was developed with these considerations in mind, along with safety and maximum effectiveness.
