Byrna Pro Tip - Holiday Parking Lots

On today’s special edition holiday Byrna Pro Tip we’re talking about how to navigate those busy store parking lots this season. A tool is only as good as your ability to use it, so train early and train often. It’s time to punch the clock!

It’s no secret that thefts and robberies increase during the holiday season, and the parking lot of a big box store or a mall is a target-rich environment for a would-be thief. As you’re leaving the store, make sure your keys are in an easy-to-reach location so you don’t have to go searching for them. Look at your surroundings and take note of other people in the parking lot. If you see someone suspicious, making eye contact makes you seem like a harder target and has proven to stop attacks before they even start.

Wait until you get to your car to unlock it. This prevents someone from knowing exactly where you’re traveling or from sneaking into your car before you get there. I know we all like to muscle those bags out in one trip, but try to consolidate them to leave one hand free. That way, if you need to get to your keys quickly or if you’re carrying a self-defense tool like a Byrna launcher or can of Bad Guy Repellent, that free hand can save you vital seconds when it counts. Since I’m a right-handed shooter, I always make sure I’m carrying items in my left hand to leave that shooting hand free.

As soon as you get into your car, lock the doors to prevent anyone from gaining access. So, the next time you go shopping, make sure you practice these small tips just to be sure that if the time comes, you are prepared to defend yourself.
