Motocross Pro Jarryd McNeil: have Byrna will travel

Professional athlete Jarryd McNeil is used to making dangerous moves on the track, but once he is off, he is glad that Byrna has his back.

“I just feel safe having something like that,” McNeil said.

McNeil has been traveling throughout the United States with Nitro Circus and for motocross competitions including the X Games and Pro AMA Nationals for the past decade.

With his busy schedule, he was looking for a self-defense option he could carry on the road.

“The first time I heard about it was actually through my neighbor,” McNeil said.

McNeil said his community is always looking out for each other and the people there have a mix of lethal and less-lethal self-defense options. Since he is no stranger to firearms or other devices powered by compressed air, he was immediately intrigued by Byrna.

“The Byrna is great for my situation. I'm always traveling on planes, I'm always traveling around the United States,” he said.

While he has bodyguards, there is comfort knowing he has something effective in his possession, especially since he said it would be difficult for him to take a firearm to the many destinations he tours.

“The fact is, I love guns. Right? I'm not taking away from it. I would love to be able to travel everywhere with a real gun, of course. But that's not the case. It's just stupid to think that you can just travel across America with a gun. It's not that easy,” he said. “Something like the Byrna makes total sense.”

McNeil, who hails from Australia, said while he understands there are a lot of people who carry real firearms in the United States, there is a time and a place for the use of lethal force or less-lethal force.

“I think having the ability if somebody comes was to come up and get aggressive with you and wants to fistfight you, or pulled a knife on you, you can least give yourself some time to get out of the situation,” he said. “And to me, that is a really big thing. Even just driving around town with it. I think it is a really great thing to have in the car.”

With his wife and newborn as part of his growing family, he also feels safe knowing they have something to fight off a threat.

“To be able to have the Byrna to be able to use it, to deflect a situation to be able to move somebody off my property or away without inflicting harm. At the end of the day, I don't want to hurt somebody like that. And I think the bonus is the perfect way to be able to deescalate the situation to be able to move that person on safely,” he said.

For McNeil, the Byrna is a great option for various individuals.

“Whether you're a foreigner, or you are a guy or girl, somebody that's just not safe, around a real firearm. I think this is a great tool to get people interested in firearms to learn how to hold it, to use it to be safe around it,” he said.
